wow. Orb. Basically some nifty technology that lets you use a home computer as a streaming server. Great for those times that you are travelling with work, or just away from your home and want to watch/listen/look at something from your home machine. Orb lets you set up a little piece of software to run on your pc. You can then log in from anywhere that has a [relatively quick] internet connection and get the goods.
The biggest bonus I see here is the ability to hook in your cable TV to the setup. (Think being at work during the final game of the world cup and not being able to watch the match). You can now! Simply login to your my.orb account and your home machine (that you previously set up to stream television) will generously let you watch the game. Nice! Above this, you can specify directories for prerecorded movies, music, and photos that you can enjoy wherever you may be.
I have set up a little test site so you can check it out in action. The files that you see are sitting here, at my home in Toronto.

I dont have my cable tv set up yet but you can check a few audio tracks and videos just to get a feel for it. Directly below the TV section, you’ll see audio, photo, and video sections. These are where your local files are. I think it is intended to serve as a personal service rather than a public sharing service but I just set something up for you to check out.
If for some reason the files aren’t working, it is probably because my machine is off.

Just got back from lunch with a few friends. A main point of discussion revolved around flash and it’s seeming demise as tool of choice for web interface design. While we all agreed that it’s time has passed as a real solution, we agreed that it did have it’s place, and does a very good job at specific tasks. Rich Media application development being one, web animation being another, and certain unique internet experiences being the last. One that id like to note stems from a bigger project that I’ve been following since inception that involves film mastermind Peter Greenaway. Listen to the attached audio file for an interesting interview with him recorded at eDIT2003. Here he talks about his new film “The Tulse Luper Suitcase”, and the plans to create more than simply a film. Extending the story into book, audio, and online format. Very interesting listen, with insight to human nature. Afterwards, check out the link below for the online portion. An online game/journey with extensive flash use to support the various forms of rich media. I think it makes an intruiging alternative art piece. Requires signup but its easy and quick.

“][MEZ][ _[net]blog to log][ah!rhythm][_, 2006 - http://www.livejournal.com/users/netwurker/ ][Mez][ presents her blog as “a reverse-engineered weblog - read: _bio_log_ as opposed to a standardized weblogâ€. In order to read it, you’ll need the “mezangelleâ€, which is the polysemic idiom that ][mez][ employs by adjusting her natural language into a hybrid form through remixing code. She began this process with e-mail art in the early 90s."

It goes without saying that Mexico in general, Mexico city specifically has housing issues. As do most countries. The challenge is addressing these issues. Mexico seems to be making a valiant effort. Just looking at some arial photos from a helicopter operator who has really captured the essence of the diversity of the area. From very extravagant and creative ultra rich architecture to addressing low-income housing needs. Click the photo above to see an example of a pretty creative solution. At first I thought the pic was a screenshot out of the SIMS or something but after a little investigation, I found the source and it’s actually a real foto of a low-income housing development.
Check out all of his photos here. Just click on one to open a slideshow.

Was just reading an article in The Star talking about the new plan for Toronto to become amongst the few cities in the world to be one giant wifi hotspot, or cloud as some like to call them. Essentially, a ubiquitous signal that lets any wireless enabled device access to the network, anywhere. It is not Roger’s or Bell (who presumaby will not be happy with this) that are providing the service. It is Toronto Hydro. Plans are to install transmitters on every 4th or 5th lightpost in the city.
Not only does it just sound damn cool, the article talks about the ability to provide the services to low-income torontonians which I just think sounds nice.
