20jazzfunkgreats

Blown away as this is the first time I sat down with this music blog. Use peel to preview tracks, download if wished to add to the collection. Nothing new. Hit the Web tab to read posters thoughts about the track if more information is sought.

20jazzfunkgreats (likely others) takes this a pleasant step beyond. My usage of peel has shifted such that I now use the Web tab more often, with 20jazz I am reading the poetic descriptions as I would if I were following a films dialogue. I let these words define my experience  while listening to the corresponding tracks… please hold, a new track has come up and i must read….back.

After a talk with Andreas, and describing the experience of above, a suggestion was made to automate the process of listening to a track while reading what said blogger had to say as cause of listening to the track they were writing about. blah blah.

What really got me wasEno’s Baby’s on Fire – not because its my favourite track offf “Taking Tiger Mountain” or “Here Come the Warm Jets” (cant remember), but for the fact that I’ve never listened to, heard reference of… until mx. That was many years ago and to date, this is only the second time i’ve heard this track outside of my iPod. Nice Work.

I’m a fan, and i’ll keep listening-reading-imagining

If you’d rather be in your den shooting things, typing to robots or scouring for the latest in liquid crystal display t-shirts on a sunny sunday afternoon you might just want a little perspective. As with any indulgence, it’s all fine in moderation.

“Technological addictions are operationally defined as non-chemical, behavioural addictions that involve human-machine interaction. They can be either passive (e.g. television) or active (e.g. the computer) and usually contain inducing and reinforcing features, which may contribute to the promotion of addictive tendencies.”

Was wandering through the bookstore here in Banff and noticed that Douglas Coupland has a new book “jpod” out. It seems to take the “book” out of it’s generic realm to include word puzzles, games etc. I stopped by the website and had some giggles with the interactive elements of it. Worth a look. I plan to buy the book soon but will settle for the site for now. I read Generation X years back and alot of it hit home. Life after God was also quite fun…

Humans make machines which make art in response to humans

Chicago based artist, Sabrina Raaf, is on to something here. She creates machines that take data from their immediate environment and respond with visual or audio output in realtime. The grower, pictured here, for instance takes measurements of the amount of c02 in the air (a byproduct of the breathe from the visitors to the gallery) and draws blades of grass according to those levels.

A nice little vid of a sequencer for the mac. Love the simplicity…

A year ago I had the pleasure of taking on a sublet here in Toronto at a nice old warehouse/loft space. Unfortunatly it did not last long as the building ended up being sold and was to be torn down and replaced by condos. Go figure. It’s ok though, I found one I like better.

I actually found the sublet via an online local newspaper classified ad. Jeff Mann was the tenant. He and his partner Michelle were busy packing up their stuff when I came by to see it. They had just received funding by the Arts Council to participate in an art project in Berlin -nice!-.

I managed to pick Jeff’s brain for a bit of detail into what his main area of focus was and I was somewhat suprised at his words as they sounded like they could have been coming out of my mouth. Electronic social interaction… networked interactive environments..sound, movement, visuals… All very similar terms that are used in the more traditional (less artistic) New Media field. (more…)

flash has it’s place – or – the tulse luper journey

Just got back from lunch with a few friends. A main point of discussion revolved around flash and it’s seeming demise as tool of choice for web interface design. While we all agreed that it’s time has passed as a real solution, we agreed that it did have it’s place, and does a very good job at specific tasks. Rich Media application development being one, web animation being another, and certain unique internet experiences being the last. One that id like to note stems from a bigger project that I’ve been following since inception that involves film mastermind Peter Greenaway. Listen to the attached audio file for an interesting interview with him recorded at eDIT2003. Here he talks about his new film “The Tulse Luper Suitcase”, and the plans to create more than simply a film. Extending the story into book, audio, and online format. Very interesting listen, with insight to human nature. Afterwards, check out the link below for the online portion. An online game/journey with extensive flash use to support the various forms of rich media. I think it makes an intruiging alternative art piece. Requires signup but its easy and quick.

curious interface

Once again, it is wayyy too late. But I’m glad it is or else I would have never found this. A dutch version is here, and a Japanese one here. Loving the creativity of the initial interface. It is simple, effective, engaging, and fun. At least it is in my world. And the corresponding links are pretty fun. Danke my Dutch brethren.
