mmmm. Just reading over the specs for Apples newest creation for the iPod. A nice self contained speaker system that supposedly competes with a lot of other, bigger dedicated sound systems. Plastic always used to scare me but I don’t think it’s the same beast it used to be. i.e. I think current manufacturing processes can now produce a pretty fine material. It’s a three driver setup, (two 80mm, one 130mm woofer) that boasts a large soundstage, precise imaging and separation, and wide frequency range. Seeing as there are specs talking about acoustically tuned enclosures, dual voice coil, sealed and tuned resin chambers… it seems like some good thought has been put into these tasties.

In keeping with their ingenuity – making small things perform like big things – they seem to have done a great job packing everything – including universal power supply, and battery housing. Oh yeah, did I say it can run on batteries? – into the housing. It doesn’t really have the appeal of a portable solution (think 80’s boombox and cardboard b-boy platforms) but looks like a great alternative to any mini system out there. Well.. maybe not ANY, but most. With room to spare for an audio input jack, and the ability to play wirelessly over airport using optical cable. (more…)
