next gen touchscreen goodness
27-Feb-06

Anyone that knows me personally knows what I have been doing for the last five odd years professionally, and those who don’t, well, you can click here to find out. Basically worked for an interactive digital cinema and installation studio here in toronto. Touchscreens were an integral part to the setup as each audience member could interact in real-time with the movie they were watching. While fun and somewhat stable there were lots of limitations that severely impacted the design of the interfaces. That said, I was very happy to stumble over this link. Although a lot of the applications seem quite abstract, the response time and multi touch accuracy is mind blowing. (more…)

Its almost March? Time to dust off the two-wheelers and get the cardio back up. For those who like cycling but aren’t that comfortable negotiating the mean city streets, biketoronto has the can-bike schedule up. Might sound funny to some but I am a firm believer that any type of self propelled transportation can do with some good knowledge. Even if your too cool for school, biketoronto has other good topics all things cycle related. enyoee.

For anyone even remotely intrigued by rhythm, please check out Steve Reich’s “Drumming” disc. Four tracks of juicy textured, layered percussion that will have you trancing out and in a state of bliss. Best enjoyed on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Steve Reich is best known – in my mind for his Music for 18 Musicians circa 1976 work (also stellar), which was taken to another level – Reich Remixed – nonesuch label – by some of todays most influential electronic producers (coldcut, howie b, dj spooky to name a few). Just geeking out to some typography. I guess i have a preference for a lot of the old dutch masters. Piet Zwart being at the top of my list. He is inspiring not only due to his contribution to letters, but was also an architect, teacher, interior, graphic, furniture designer, and photographer. He was well known for pushing visual boundaries and was linked to de Stijl in his views although never officially joined the movement. One of the few who could marry the functional with the aesthetically pleasing. Like all relevant artists (I say artist although some might argue that typography is left to the designer), he was very socially aware and his work was meant to reflect change, or at least the need for it. Thought i’d share a local organization to help music talent get into it. Factor is helping independant canadian music talent get up and running.
A snippet:
“FACTOR, The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records, was founded in 1982 by CHUM Limited, Moffat Communications and Rogers Broadcasting Limited, in conjunction with the Canadian Independent Record Producers Association (CIRPA) and the Canadian Music Publishers Association (CMPA). Standard Broadcasting merged its Canadian Talent Library (CTL) development fund with FACTOR’s in 1985.
As a private non-profit organization, FACTOR is dedicated to providing assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent recording industry. The foundation administers the voluntary contributions from sponsoring radio broadcasters as well as two components of the Department of Canadian Heritage’s newly formed Canada Music Fund Council’s programs to support the Canadian music industry. FACTOR has been managing federal funds since the inception of the Sound Recording Development Program in 1986 (now known as the Canada Music Fund Council).”

my favourite frame builder
23-Feb-06
I have been eye-ing these luscious frames for a few years now. A little pricey but not really for what you get. One of the few builders that still use lugs (drool). Some are even hand-carved. And the paint schemes are nice and sugary.

la nuit electronik

It’s time once again for the Montreal Highlights Festival. A week long festival that keeps the city going night and day. It is by far one of the most interesting festivals I can think of worldwide, with something for everyone. The main focus of the festival being the last weekend (in this case it’s this weekend coming up). A noteable that I plan on checking out is “La nuit Electronik” put on by Piknic Electronik and Mutek. Always a great positive vibe full of diverse, interesting people, and wild local and international musicians.
Many many many many art exhibits, great food, and just a real royal party. Anyone interested in taking the drive, drop me a line.
werd.
