(Jah bless it’s friday)

Right after I heard this song I went for a coffee with Duane from work. I must have been whistling it or humming it or something because I heard him whistle the exact tune. I asked him why it was in his head knowing that the chances of him listening to Dead Disco that morning were really slim. He told me it was a cheesy R&B tune called ‘I want to know (what turns you on)’ by Joe. If you’re familiar with this tune at all listen to ‘Automatic’ right around the 1 minute mark and you’ll hear the similarities in melody. I was going to layer them on top of each other to demonstrate but my mashup comments from last week seem to have raised a few feathers and I don’t want upset the sneakerbike massive.
Dead Disco – Automatic

I’ve probably listened to this album (Classics) about a thousand times this week. I really can’t get enough. It’s the perfect blend of electronic sounds and live instrumentation. All together a great summer album. That’s why it was hard picking one track to post here. They’re all so good. For what it’s worth the rest of the tracks are very same-same but in this case at least that turns out to be a good thing.

Ratatat – Lex

I gave the new Jurassic 5 album a couple listens and have to say I’m not thrilled to death with it. They’re doing all the same tricks as before but without the same energy. The one track that did stand out however you’d never pin as a J5 tune. It’s the last track on the album, a latin inspired instrumental.

Jurassic 5 – Canto de Ossanha

It’s so good. Turns out Ertha was a bit of a player. Check out this translated from the banter at the end of the song. This could have come from any modern rap song

I’m looking for a millionaire
With big Cadillac cars
Mink coats – jewels
As big as your fist – you know?
It’s good
This little feeling -
Perhaps someone with a little yacht, no?
Aahhh it’s good -
it’s good – so good-
You know I’m waiting for
someone who can give me
plenty of loot.
Tonight? – Tomorrow?- Next Week?
Dosen’t matter when.
Uummm – It’s so good – so good
It will be very crazy, no?
It’s very good!
Ertha Kitt – C’est Si Bon

ps. Send your money to me so that I can buy the albums.

Friday keeps happening

(Luckily so do the tunes)

This track puts me in such a good mood. The very first tender utterance of the comforting “babay” makes me want to curl up in her arms and let her rub my back and sing me to sleep. Oddly I manage to remain blissed out even when she metaphorically likens herself to a steaming pile of shit being expelled from the bowels of her lover.

The Blow – Babay

Another one of those random tracks that I found on one of my daily blogs. I’ve since lost any reference to it though. I suppose I could dig up the post or google the artist/remixer but I’m sure you’d prefer to listen to the track than read about it.

Portugal. The Man – How the Leopard Got It’s Spots (Blake Miller Remix)

Sure to be the next club banger.

E40 – Stunna Glasses at Night (Federation Remix)

I long ago gave up on the mash up as a novelty trick. ‘Hey look someone’s blended that one great track with that other great track to make a new track of far lesser quality… Excellent!’ If there’s anyone who still listens to these things more than once I’d be surprised. Girl Talk however is much more than a mashup artist. More like a dj set with severe ADD. Over a two minute period he’ll weave anywhere from 10 to 20 tracks (or rather fragments of tracks) together by my best count. It’s the precision of the work that really amazes me though. Having attempted to do similar things before I can only imagine the amount of time it must have taken to cut, clean and arrange the samples used here. The result is seamless.
Pitchfork may be right in their review of the album when they say that some of the newer fly by night tracks will get lost in time next to the classics but for the time being at least, this feels just about right.

Girl Talk – Hold Up

ps. For the price of a cup of coffee a day you could help send some artist’s child to school in a limo. Think about it.

friday mix

07-Jul-06

SO i decided to record a mix for a radio show im doing here. I recently watched Scorcese’s Bob Dylan documentary which I think explains the substantial folk factor in the mix. Anyway, hope y’all enjoy it at some point. Its around an hour long so might take a while to load for some of you.

oh yeah.. I managed to sneak a remix of Julians in there near the beginning, and mx shows up at some point too ;)
